Points of Interest |
Luxor, built on the 4000-year-old site of the city of Thebes, is the present day location of some of the greatest and best-preserved monuments in the country. Expert guides will transport you back in time, bringing the Pharaonic era to life.
Visit the great temples of Karnak and Luxor on the East Bank to marvel at the achievements of one of the earliest civilisations: the Valley of the Kings and Queens, the recently renovated mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut at El-Deir El-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon, the two huge figures of Amenhotep III that are all that remain of his mortuary temple. The Nile-side Temple of Horus in Edfu is following by a visit to the Temple of Kom Ombo, which was shared by two gods, Sobek and Haeroris.
Between the cities of Luxor and Aswan, admire the small islands and colourful Nile-side villages. They are enveloped in rural patchwork of fields planted with banana palms, sugar cane and cotton, where water buffalo plough the fields and donkey carts transport the abundant crops.
In the heart of Nubia, Aswan offers a unique and timeless atmosphere and wonders of both the ancient and the modern world. In Aswan there is a visit to a feat of modern engineering, the High Dam with spectacular views of Lake Nasser, the granite quarries of the Pharaohs, the island Temple of Philae and the unfinished Obelisk, which if completed would have been the tallest ever carved. Then sail on a felucca around the famous botanical gardens on Kitchener Island, created by Lord Kitchener, the former Governor of Sudan and hero of World War I. |
